Amateur Radio Training
The UK Amateur Radio licencing system has three levels of licences, each level offering different levels of transmitted power and privileges.
The first level is called Foundation and introduces candidates to Amateur Radio and on a successful examination pass allows them to transmit on most of the amateur bands up to a power level of 25watts.
The course is broken down into eight sections, covering the syllabus as follows:
- Licensing conditions and station identification
- Technical aspects
- Transmitters and receivers
- Feeders and antennas
- Propagation
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
- Operating practices and procedures
- Safety
There is a small amount of radio and electronics theory in the course but only enough for you to understand how to safely assemble your equipment, adjust an antenna, make your first contacts and then get the most out of your radio.
The course usually takes 10-12 hours, spread over a few weeks.
The examination can be taken online (at home or our club) or as a traditional paper exam (at our club). The exam consists of 26 multiple choice questions which you have 60 minutes to answer. The Pass Mark is 19 (73%)
Candidates with special needs can apply for extra time and reader and/or writer can be provided.
On successfully passing a Foundation examination many students want to increase their skills and knowledge and start studying for the Intermediate examination.
We do not offer Intermediate training but highly recommend our colleague Steve Hartley who runs classroom-based and online Intermediate and Full classes.
